What is Clumsy Bird?

Clumsy Bird is a one-button arcade game in the style of Flappy Bird. You control a small, badly coordinated bird that keeps falling. Each tap makes it flap once and gain a little height. Pipes scroll in from the right with a narrow gap, and your only job is to steer the bird through gap after gap without touching anything. Hit a pipe or the ground and the round is over. The score is simply the number of pipes you have passed, which is why a score of 10 feels like an achievement and a score of 50 makes people stop and watch.

The game was written in 2014 by Ellison Leão as an open-source project built with the melonJS engine and released under the GPL-3.0 license. The copy on this page is that original code, hosted here so it starts instantly with no download, no account and nothing to install.

How to play Clumsy Bird

  1. Click the screen or press the space bar to start. On a phone, tap anywhere on the game area.
  2. Every tap flaps the wings once. The bird rises a fixed amount and then starts falling again straight away.
  3. Keep the bird inside the gap between the top and bottom pipes. The gap is the same size for every pipe, but its height changes.
  4. Passing a pipe adds one point. There is no bonus for style, speed or how close you fly.
  5. Touching a pipe, the ground or the top edge ends the game. Tap again to restart from zero.

Sound effects and background music play by default. If you are playing somewhere quiet, mute the tab from the browser.

Tips and strategy

Tap in rhythm, not in panic. Most crashes happen when a player taps several times in a row to recover from a dive. Instead, tap once, wait for the bird to peak, let it fall a little, then tap again. A steady beat of roughly one tap per second keeps the bird level.

Aim for the lower third of the gap. Because the bird rises quickly and falls slowly, flying slightly low gives you more room to correct upward with a single tap than you would have to correct downward.

Look at the next pipe, not the bird. Your eyes should be on the gap that is coming, so you tap in time to meet it. Staring at the bird makes every reaction late.

Stop when you are tired. Scores drop sharply after a few minutes of play because the timing window is so small. Short sessions with rests beat long grinding sessions.

Ignore the music. The soundtrack has its own tempo that does not match the pipe spacing. Some players mute it to keep their tapping rhythm clean.

FAQ

Is Clumsy Bird free to play?

Yes. The game runs in your browser at no cost and does not require an account or a download.

Can I play Clumsy Bird on mobile?

Yes. Tap anywhere on the game area to flap. The game is designed for portrait screens and works on both iPhone and Android browsers.

Is Clumsy Bird the same as Flappy Bird?

No. Flappy Bird was a 2013 mobile app by Dong Nguyen that was removed from app stores in 2014. Clumsy Bird is a separate open-source game that copies the one-tap idea with its own graphics and code.

What is a good score in Clumsy Bird?

Most first-time players score under 5. Reaching 20 means your timing is consistent, and 50 or more puts you in a small group of players who have practised the rhythm.

Why does the bird fall so fast?

Gravity in the game is deliberately strong so that each flap matters. The feeling of being out of control is the point of the design, and it fades after a few dozen runs once your tapping becomes regular.
