What is the 2048 game?

2048 is a single-player sliding puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Every tile carries a power of two. You slide all tiles in one direction, and whenever two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into a single tile worth their sum. After each move a new tile appears, usually a 2 and sometimes a 4. The goal is to build a tile that reads 2048. Reaching it does not end the game, so experienced players keep merging toward 4096, 8192 and beyond until the board fills up and no legal move remains.

The game was released in March 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli as a weekend project and was published under the MIT license. Within a month it was being played millions of times a day, and it has stayed one of the most searched browser games ever since. The version on this page is that original open-source build, hosted here so it loads instantly without ads inside the board, trackers, or an app install.

How to play 2048

  1. Use the arrow keys on a keyboard, or swipe on a touch screen, to slide every tile on the board in that direction.
  2. Tiles slide until they hit the wall or another tile. Two tiles with the same number that collide merge into one tile with double the value.
  3. A merged tile cannot merge again during the same move, so a row of 2, 2, 4 moved left becomes 4, 4, not 8.
  4. After every move a new tile spawns in a random empty cell. Keep enough empty cells to stay flexible.
  5. Reach the 2048 tile to win. You can keep playing afterwards to chase a higher score.
  6. The game ends when the grid is full and no two neighbouring tiles share a value.

Your score is the sum of all merges you have made, so bigger merges late in the game add up quickly. The best score is saved in your browser, and a new game button resets the board at any time.

Tips and strategy

Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile there. Most strong players anchor the largest tile in the bottom-right or bottom-left corner and never move it. Choose two directions, for example down and right, and use them for almost every move. Only use the opposite direction when nothing else is possible.

Build a snake. Arrange tiles so that values decrease along the bottom row, then continue the sequence back along the row above in the opposite direction. When a new tile fits the chain, merges cascade across the board in a single move.

Do not chase the new tile. Beginners react to where the fresh 2 lands. Instead, plan the move that keeps your corner locked and your rows ordered, and let the spawn fall where it may.

Count empty cells. When you are down to three or four empty cells, slow down. Look for the move that frees the most space, even if it postpones a big merge.

Avoid the trap row. If a small tile gets stuck beside your largest tile in the anchor row, the whole structure is at risk. Clear it early rather than building on top of it.

2048 variants

Because the rules are so simple, hundreds of variants exist: bigger boards such as 5×5 and 8×8, versions with letters, Fibonacci numbers, images, or a timer, and multiplayer races. This site collects the ones people actually search for, each on its own page, so you can jump between them from the games list below.

FAQ

Is 2048 free to play?

Yes. This page runs the open-source game in your browser at no cost and does not require an account.

What is the highest possible tile in 2048?

On a 4×4 board the theoretical maximum is 131072, which requires a perfect sequence of 4-tile spawns. In practice 8192 is a strong result and 16384 is rare.

Can I play 2048 on my phone?

Yes. Swipe in any of the four directions to move the tiles. The board resizes for small screens.

Does the game save my progress?

Your best score is stored in the browser's local storage. The current board is also saved, so you can close the tab and continue later on the same device.

Who made 2048?

Gabriele Cirulli built it in 2014, inspired by the games 1024 and Threes. He released the code under the MIT license, which is why faithful copies like this one are legal to host.
